Faulty septic tanks pose a serious risk to both human health and the environment in the Shannonside region.
That's according to the Environmental Protection Agency, which released it's annual report today.
Almost 80 percent of examined tanks in Roscommon failed their inspections last year.
47 tanks were checked in the county in 2021, with the majority of these not passing.
In Leitrim, close to 90 percent of tanks failed due to structural defects or low maintenance, with 27 inspections taking place over the 12 months.
Meanwhile Longford had a septic tank failure rate of just 45 percent.
However inspectors carried out only 11 examinations of problem tanks in 2021.
