There are growing concerns that a peaceful protest in Castlerea has been hijacked by elements of the Far Right. It comes after the Department of Integration confirmed plans to accommodate refugees at the Riverwalk Apartment complex. Locals had planned to march on Sunday calling for extra supports ahead of the arrival of International Protection applicants.
Organisers say they've been forced to suspend the peaceful protest due to fears a more divisive protest group has emerged. Members of a group calling itself 'Castlerea Says No' says it plans to protest in the town this Sunday. Local activist Isabelle Flanagan says a number of residents are now fearful following recent protests outside the proposed site. Speaking to Shannonside News, she said everyone was welcome in Castlerea but extra supports were needed:
