The CEO of North West Simon says the attitude of the Department of Housing about funding the organisation needs to change.
Noel Daly has been speaking following figures which show a record number of homeless people in the North West Region in a week at the end of July this year.
The figures from the Department showed 106 people, including 22 children, who had to be provided with emergency accommodation across Leitrim, Sligo and Donegal in that week.
The CEO of the homeless charity for the 3 counties says even though a lot of the funding is raised by volunteers, the attitude of the Department of Housing is much too rigid to properly address the housing needs of people across the country right now…
"The Department operates a tight rein, it's as simple as the three local authorities in the area can say we need to give the Simon Community €77,000.
There is a need for a new brand of services and that, if the Minister would act on that proposal, it would take us outside the funding stream that they have so much problem bending from.
We need an improvement or if it is impossible to see how Northwest Simon could continue to survive."
