The Fianna Fáil councillor was elected as Cathaoirleach for the second time at last Friday's AGM.

The last term saw a partnership between the eight Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael councillors and Independents.

Councillor Casey will be the first Cathaoirleach of the county for the new council and will formally be appointed at the Annual General Meeting next week.

Lanesboro's Mark Casey will be announced as the new Cathaoirleach of Longford County Council next week.

He got 3,021 votes in the 14th count, while Gildernew got only 567.

Talks are taking place to see who will power in the chamber after the local elections.

After a marathon count on Sunday which continued into the early morning today, 10 seats have been won across the Local Electoral Areas of Ballymahon, Granard and Longford so far.
