Close to a quarter of people released from prison or on probation orders in the Shannonside Northern Sound region re-offended in the first year of their sentence. Figures released from the CSO breakdown the number and re-offending rate of those on probation for an earlier conviction. 100 people on probation in the region were convicted by Gardaí of a subsequent offence within 12 months of being issued a probation order in 2019.
Cavan recorded the highest number locally, with 48 people re-offending, a total of 27% of those on probation orders at the time. That's followed by Monaghan at 18 re-offenders, making up 23% of those with the order. That percentage of re-offending is the same in Longford where 18 people were convicted for a separate crime in the first 12 months of their sentence. Meanwhile, Roscommon and Leitrim share the same number of re-offenders at 5 with a subsequent rate of 11 and 15 percent. Nationally, almost half of those on the orders committed at least one crime for which they received a conviction in the first three years of their probation.
