The director of a new film based on the life of Ann Lovett believes the teenager's story must be told to tackle issues in society.
The narrative focuses on a single day in January 1984 when the then 15-year-old girl died after giving birth at a Grotto in Granard.
It was shot on location in Boyle Co. Roscommon, during the summer of 2021, with the assistance of the Film Office in Roscommon County Council. 'Ann' which has previously premiered at a number of international film festivals will be released in selected Irish cinemas this Friday.
Speaking on the Joe Finnegan Show director Ciaran Creagh says after reading about Ann it was something he needed to do.
''The function of a writer is to tackle issues, put them out there and then see what happens. Many great writers have done such in the past and I'm definitely not counting myself in the same bracket. It affected me when I read it and that's why I did it, and then I'm hoping then as a country there's many incidents where we have faced up to bad things that have happened in the past. There was very little done in the media about this, I don't know was there not a will to tackle this topic.''
