A new film about the life of a well-known native of the diocese of Elphin was premiered yesterday.
'Heart of a Servant- the Father Flanagan Story' tells the story of Fr Edward Flanagan, who was from Ballymoe on the Roscommon-Galway Border.
In 1917, Fr Flanagan founded Boys Town in Omaha, USA, an orphanage and educational facility for poor and troubled boys.
His life became the subject of a 1938 Hollywood film also called 'Boys Town', where he was played by Spencer Tracy.
He was declared a 'Servant of God' by the Vatican in 2012 and this new film was sponsored by the Father Flanagan League
Speaking at the premiere in Sligo yesterday, Fidelma Croghan from the Fr Flanagan Group in Ballymoe says they're very proud that Fr Flanagan's work will be shown to a wider audience
"We're very excited that this documentary has been made and that it will be showcased to the people of Ireland and hopefully further afield again to educate them about Fr Flanagan. We're delighted in Ballymoe. He being a son of Ballymoe, we're very proud of all he achieved in his life, the humble beginnings he came from and what he went on to achieve. We are praying for his cause, that it may progress".
