The final stretch of greenway from the White Gates in Athlone town down to the marina at the River Shannon should be open to the public in the coming summer.
The 1.1 kilometres stretch has been designed to be almost entirely segregated from other road traffic.
The contractor has already started work on the latest section and an underpass underneath the rail line at Montree has also been built in the last year and a half.
Senior executive engineer with Westmeath Council Michael Kelly says the work on this section will involve constructing another boundary wall at St Vincent's hospital in order to keep cyclists separate from traffic.
