The two candidates vying for the position are Valerie Duffy, a community activist from Drum, and Ger Grehan, a well-known farming man from Taughmaconnell.

Two candidates will battle it out tonight to fill John Naughten's seat on Roscommon County Council. Just over 60 Fine Gael members are allowed to vote. South Roscommon councillor John Naughten died last October while aged in his early 50s. He had been a highly respected Fine Gael councillor for 20 years before he lost his life at his home in Drum. His seat on Roscommon County Council has been vacant since his death almost five months ago.

Tonight, though, his successor will be chosen. A Fine Gael selection convention is taking place in the Athlone Springs Hotel at 7.30pm. The two candidates vying for the position are Valerie Duffy, a community activist from Moore, and Ger Grehan, a well-known farming man from Taughmaconnell. There are just over 60 party members in south Roscommon eligible to vote. Whoever's successful be formally ratified at next Monday's Roscommon County Council meeting.
