Fine Gael will select at least one candidate for the general election in the Roscommon-Galway constituency tonight. Four people will contest their selection convention in the Abbey Hotel in Roscommon town at 7.30 this evening.
Fine Gael hasn't had a TD elected in Roscommon since the county's accident and emergency unit was closed in 2011. In the forthcoming general election, they will be hoping to break that luck in the Roscommon-Galway constituency.
First of all, they have to select their candidates, and that's what's happening this evening. Over 300 party members will cast their votes, with south Roscommon Councillor John Naughten, Ballinasloe senator Aisling Dolan, Ballinasloe Councillor Alan Harney and Arigna's Dympna Daly-Finn all nominated.
Naughten will be hoping the Naughten dynasty can continue - his brother Denis and their father Liam have both served in the Dail. Denis is about to quit after a 27-year spell in Leinster House, most recently as an Independent but previously as a Fine Gael rep.
Aisling Dolan has been a senator since June 2020, as a Taoiseach's nominee. Harney is a recently elected councillor and also has experience as a parliamentary assistant in Leinster House.
Daly-Finn contested the recent local elections in the Boyle electoral area, and only narrowly missed out on a seat. The party will select either one or two candidates tonight.
