There is increasing speculation that long-serving Fine Gael councillor John Naughten is set to run for the party in the general election.
The south Roscommon man was recently re-elected to the council in the Athlone local electoral area.
Fine Gael will hold a selection convention for Roscommon-Galway by September - and Councillor Naughten says he hasn't decided whether to put his name forward.
His brother, Denis, isn't contesting the next general election after 27 years in the Dáil.
He has been an Independent for the past 13 years, after leaving Fine Gael over the closure of the A&E in Roscommon in 2011.
Former cathaoirleach of Roscommon, Michael Scally, believes Councillor Naughten would have a very good chance of taking one of the three seats in Roscommon-Galway.
"There's a Naughten seat in Roscommon since 1980 - his father Liam before Denis," he said.
"And I always believed that that seat would stay in the family.
"I am firmly convinced that John Naughten will be running next October in the general election for Fine Gael. That's my opinion.
"It is fairly clear cut that there will be one Sinn Fein seat, one Independent in Michael Fitzmaurice and the third seat is a toss-up between Fine Gael candidate John Naughten or a Fianna Fáil candidate."
