The inaugural meeting of Ballintubber and District Kayak Club is taking place tonight.
The club will cover areas like Ballymore, Castlerea, and Castleplunkett and there's been a strong interest in its development locally.
Tonight's meeting comes as works on inlets on the River Suck are being advertised on e-tender.
Funding of €200,000 was allocated under the Outdoor Recreational Infrastructure Scheme for the works to facilitate kayaking on the waterway last year.
Local councillor Anthony Waldron says they're very optimistic for the future development of the project:
There is enormous interest at the moment in outdoor recreational activities.
It;s the way to go in particular for Roscommon because it has an awful lot to offer in that area in regards to develop sustainable jobs and tourism.
it's exciting times for the area.
