Thousands of students around the country will only be able to begin looking for accomodation after they receive their first round CAO offers today

The Registrar at TUS in Athlone says they are concerned about how first year students will fare when they look for accommodation in the coming weeks.

Dr Terry Twomey was speaking as the first round CAO applications are being issued today for over 44,000 prospective students around the country.

He says initiatives run internally by the college have had a good response and people have been offering rooms to rent in their homes who wouldn't have done so previously.

Speaking on the Let's Talk show today the college registrar says it is still very difficult to say how bad the accommodation crisis will be in Athlone until the first years get their offers and make their decision on what to do.

'Because of the late results, that's proving problematic, in other words the first years will be coming on to the accomodation market when everybody else has already had a couple of weeks to sort out their accomodation for the coming academic year.

So we are concerned about that , we won't know until the students come to us in the next couple of weeks how they're going to cope with it, whether some of them will choose to drive to college rather than taking up accomodation in Athlone, whether they will take up those rooms in a house, or what other option they might look at.'
