A lengthy road closure is now in place in Athlone to facilitate upgrade works.
Mardyke Street will be closed for a period of 5 months to allow it's redevelopment alongside part of Sean Costello Street.
The project was awarded funding under the Urban Regeneration and Development Fund and will include improvements to lighting, street furniture, and the pedestrianisation of Sean Costello Street.
Cathaoirleach of the Athlone Municipal District, Aengus O'Rourke, says although the closure will cause disruption, it will be worth it in the long run
"The gain at the end of this will be a much enhanced street. The Sean Costello Street part of that triangle will be pedestrianised which will be an interesting first for the town of Athlone. We don't have pedestrianised streets yet in place. We're looking forward to seeing how that will work, I think it'll be very successful and so while there will be a bit of pain, there'll be a lot to be gained from it in the end"
