The installation of the pipe was halted in 2021 following legal action from Friends of the Irish Environment.

He said works to relieve pinch points on the Shannon had not progressed following the allocation of €7 million four years ago.

The deadline for the receipt of tenders is the 2nd of February and the project is expected to take three years.

John Mulvihill from the Capital Projects Office at Leitrim council says they've already been carrying out works close to the villages to allow water flow more freely in the local rivers.

The council had considered the original request to be too large to process.

The first item for the proposed task force would be the go ahead of flood relief works at Lough Funshinagh in Roscommon

The court has adjourned a decision on whether the works can restart in the meantime until the end of this month.
