Independent TD Michael Fitzmaurice says he will put forward a motion of no confidence in the minister with responsibility for forestry, Pippa Hackett, if positive changes are not forthcoming in the forestry sector.
The Roscommon-Galway Deputy says despite measures including hiring more ecologists to alleviate problems with the backlog in issuing licenses, the industry is in crisis.
Ireland is set not to meet its target of planting 8,000ha to address its emissions, and Deputy Fitzmaurice says this could result in sectors such as farming having to make up to the shortfall.
He says the sector is already on its knees and will crumble – and the Minister must be held accountable.
