A former Longford politician and hotelier will return before the court today for sentence. Frank Kilbride of Aughakilmore, Ballinalee in Longford was charged with and plead guilty to three charges under money laundering legislation at Longford Circuit Court in January. The charges state Mr Kilbride, on dates in 2017 and 2018, engaged in converting, transferring, handling, acquiring and possessing property that was the proceeds of criminal conduct to the approximate amount of €1.7 million.

A second charge brought against the former Fine Gael politician had him taking part in money laundering between November 2017 and March 2018, to the amount of €867,143. A third charge, bringing the total to €2.6 million, included the handling, possession and conversion of €10,000 found to be the proceeds of criminal conduct. Mr Kilbride appeared at Longford Circuit Court earlier this month, but due to time constraints following a separate and unconnected case taking a large portion of the courts time, his sentencing was postponed two weeks to today.

In what is expected to be a lengthy hearing this afternoon, Judge Kenneth Connolly will sentence the Longford man on three charges under money laundering legislation.
