A retired Roscommon army officer says Ireland has a well earned reputation to carry out military training in support of Ukrainian soldiers.
Former Irish Army Brigadier General Ger Ahearn was commenting after the government approved training for Ukrainian troops with up to 30 Defence Force personnel.
Ger Ahern says he understands they will be helping in giving specialist training such as de-mining and the disposal of explosives.
He says the Irish Defence Forces have a strong level of expertise in these disciplines and are well suited to provide this kind of help.
'The Defence Forces are going to impart two specific areas of training on is in explosive ordinance demolition which is the bomb disposal crews and particular in demining.
Now we have a well deserved expertise in bomb disposal.'
