Senator Murphy could run as an Independent instead and abandon the party he's been in for over 40 years.

A former cathaoirleach of Roscommon County Council is urging Senator Eugene Murphy not to run as an Independent in the general election.

Fianna Fáil decided not to add the Scramogue man to its ticket in Roscommon-Galway, meaning Ballygar GP Martin Daly will be its only candidate.

Senator Murphy could run as an Independent instead and abandon the party he's been in for over 40 years.

But Shannonside FM political analyst Michael Scally says he should stick with Fianna Fáil and try to retain his Seanad seat.
