Tributes have been paid to former mayor of Roscommon Martin Connaughton who passed away yesterday, at the age of 80.
He died suddenly but peacefully at his farm in Athleague.
First elected to Roscommon County Council in 1999, Mr Connaughton won re-election in 2004 and again in 2009.
The Fianna Fáil stalwart served as mayor of the county from 2013 to 2014, stepping down at that year's local elections.
His son Ivan followed in his footsteps when he was elected to the local authority in 2014, winning re-election in 2019 before stepping down.
Paying tribute to the late Martin Connaughton, former government minister and Roscommon TD Michael Finneran said he had a great following in the county:
Martin’s remains will repose at Hamrock’s Funeral Home, Athleague tomorrow Wednesday from 5pm to 8pm.
His funeral will take place on Thursday in St. Patrick's Church, Athleague at 12 noon, followed by burial in Athleague Cemetery.
Danny Burke, from Castlerea, served alongside him as a councillor and was a friend of his.
