Former Sinn Fein councillor Paul Hogan has succeeded in taking the vacant seat on Westmeath County Council.
The seat was left empty with the resignation of Independent councillor Jamie Moran earlier this month, who nominated his father to fill the seat.
While it is normally the case that there is no opposition to a candidate recommended for co-option, this was not the case in Westmeath this time out and the matter went to a vote between Paul Hogan and Kevin Boxer Moran at the council monthly meeting this afternoon.
Paul Hogan served previously on Westmeath County Council from 2004 as a Sinn Fein councillor.
He resigned from the party towards the end of his last term but was unsuccessful in running as an Independent in the last local elections in 2019.
