AIB announced the plan on Tuesday.

Local business communities are reacting negatively to a decision by AIB to remove all cash and cheque services from four local branches.

Personal and business banking customers of the bank have been strongly criticising the move that will see 70 AIB branches nationwide will make the move by October.

While the bank's partnership with An Post will be expanded, so that customers can lodge and withdraw money from their account through their local post offices, customers are unhappy with the decision.

Ballinamore in Leitrm and Castlerea in Roscommon will both see the end of their cash service at the end of September, with the public urged to attend either their local post office or the branches in Carrick on Shannon or Roscommon.

Meanwhile, Longford and Ballinasloe AIBs will make the move in October with Roscommon and Athlone branches listed as the nearest full service branches.

Secretary of the Castlerea Town Team and local businesses man Gareth Scahill says they're worried that people will bypass the town now for their business and banking needs:

''In Castlerea, we've been welcoming people from Ballyhaunis and Ballaghadereen for years to do their banking. And that has an impact on our local economy here because those people spend money in town. So you wouldn't be worried here in Castlerea that people might bypass town and head to Roscommon and I suppose we'd be going along the message to look at the Bank of Ireland and especially maybe the credit unions.''
