The Longford-Ballymahon LEA is set for a full recount, starting this morning.
Outgoing Fine Gael councillor Paul Ross topped the poll after the first count with 1,300 votes.
However, speculation grew throughout the afternoon as a very tight contest for the final two seats was expected.
Outgoing Fianna Fáil councillors Mick Cahill and Pat O’Toole along with Independent councillor Mark Casey look set to retain their seats.
However, the picture is less clear as you move down through candidates. Fine Gael’s Colm Murray and Martin Skelly, Fianna Fáil’s Sean Mimnagh, Sinn Féin’s John Rooney and Independent Gerald Farrell were all separated by around 80 votes.
Following the fourth count, Independent Gerald Farrell was just one vote behind Fianna Fáil’s Sean Mimnagh.
Returning Officer Mary Gouldsberry declared Farrell eliminated. However, a request for a full recount was put forward by the Farrell camp which the returning officer accepted.
The full recount is due to take place from 9am on Monday morning. Follow live updates from the Longford count centre.
