A fundraiser for a local fireman who was diagnosed with a rare type of cancer is hoping to raise enough money to pay for long term care.
Fintan McDonald, a firefighter in Ballymahon, is currently fighting an extremely uncommon type of cancer called soft tissue sarcoma.
He will require specialist care to help prolong his life, and a gofundme page has been set up by friends of the family to try and raise the funds for it.
One of Fintan and his wife Edel's close friends, Karen Heneghan, says the outpouring of support from the local community has been incredible.
"So many people approached me in Ballymahon. Everybody wanted to do something but they didn't know what to do and I spoke long and hard with Fintan and Edel and they were a bit unsure about it actually, as anybody would be. People just wanted to do something and this just seemed like the right thing to do. People were coming to the house and offering to mind baby Fintan, give Edel lifts up to the hospital so she could be with Fintan but I can't believe how the gofundme has taken off. It's absolutely amazing, people are just so, so good".
