Mary O'Rourke worked tirelessly throughout her life in the service of others, her funeral has heard. The former Government Minister from Athlone, who passed away at the age of 87 last Thursday, will be laid to rest this afternoon in Coosan Cemetery. President Michael D Higgins and Tánaiste Micheál Martin were among the mourners at Our Lady Queen of Peace Church in Coosan earlier today. Also in attendance were a number of current and former politicians as well as Taoiseach Simon Harris' Aide de Camp Commandant Claire Mortimer.
Fr Patrick Murphy said Ms O'Rourke was 'blessed with a strong personality and character' which allowed her to succeed in what was then male-dominated politics. He said she was proud of where she came from and grew up in a family steeped in politics, which had a high regard for public service. Among the symbols of Mary's life that were brought to the altar by her six grandchildren was a photograph with her late husband Enda, a Fianna Fáil flag, her memoir 'Just Mary', a rugby jersey, a mobile phone and a newspaper. Fr Murphy told those present that she was devoted to her beloved husband Enda, her children and grandchildren:
Mary O'Rourke will be laid to rest in Coosan Cemetery, where Bishop Paul Connell will lead prayers. She is survived by her sons Feargal and Aengus, her daughters-in-law Maeve and Lisa, six grandchildren and extended family.
