An Athlone Councillor is calling for the installation of CCTV along the town's greenway.
John Dolan says homeowners along the route as well as those using the amenity have raised concerns over incidents of criminality taking place.
The Fine Gael representative brought a motion before the Athlone Moate MD, however in response Westmeath County Council stated the provision of CCTV at any other location is a matter primarily for An Garda Siochána.
They believe the Greenway is considered to be a safe and enjoyable amenity which is floodlit. Councillor Dolan renewed his call following an incident on Tuesday last in which a young woman was approached by a man on the greenway and was left shaken.
He feels cameras would benefit those using the amenity.
