Longford Town’s title hopes all but evaporated in a bizarre second-half as they lost 6-2 to Galway Untied in Bishopsgate.

Town had led two-nil after 32 minutes and looked set to make a title charge only for Galway to find the Longford net five times in the second-half to win 6-2.

Rob Manley had opened the scoring after five minutes for Town as he followed in Aaron McCabe’s bicycle kick which had been saved by Michael Schlingermann.

Adam Evans had made it 2-0 on 32 minutes as he pounced on a Galway mistake with Town looking well in control.

However things started to change two minutes before the break as Marc Ludden scrambled a loose ball home following a free-kick making it 2-1 at half-time.

Ludden equalised five minutes into the second-half after Lee Stacey had dropped a Galway corner, it was the start of an amazing turn around.

Carlton Ubaezuonu put Galway ahead on 58 minutes as he bicycle kicked a shot past Stacey. Ubaezuonu made it 4-2 five minutes later poking home a Maurice Nugent flick on which Stacey could only push out.

Wilson Waweru made it 5-2 on 79 minutes with Ubeazuonu sealing his hat-trick two minutes later after chasing onto a Marc Ludden through ball and smashing the ball past Stacey.

Town’s title hopes are now all but over as they trail Bray Wanderers by six points with three games remaining.

With Galway United closing the gap on Town to three points and Cabinteely beating Cobh, the pressure is now on Town to retain a play-off spot.
