The Garda Representative Association says body-cams will benefit the victims of crime, as well as members of the force.
New legislation before the Dáil could see them in use by the end of the year.
Brendan O'Connor from the GRA says the kits could play a vital role in preventing assaults and securing convictions:
'Well often you have a situation where victims of crime are under coercion or control of the perpetrator and the body cam captures the immediacy after the assault or an episode of violence or damage to a home. It allows jurys and judges to capture the atmosphere and horror of the aftermath of an incident perhaps where a witness has been intimidated or is reluctant to come forward.'
