The Garda Commissioner is leading the tributes to Detective Garda Colm Horkan on the first anniversary of his death. The 49-year-old Detective Garda was killed following a shooting in Castlerea town centre just before midnight on June 17th 2020.
Drew Harris has expressed his sympathies to the family of Detective Garda Colm Horkan as his family, friends and colleagues remember him on the first anniversary of his killing.
The Garda commissioner says that as well as sadness at Colm's death, there is also great pride being felt by friends and family for a person who was loved and respected by so many people and pride in Colm's community spirit and desire to help and support others.
The head of the Gardai has praised the 49-year old as professional, hard-working, supportive, community-focused, and brave and says he will never be forgotten
Colm's family has also issued a statement on his first anniversary - describing the Charlestown native as one of a kind and how life will never be the same without him.
The family is also thanking the public for their support, as they continue to carry the deep grief that they feel with the loss of Colm,
A private anniversary Mass will be held in Charlestown later this evening, while a special commemoration will be held in Castlerea on Saturday, which the Garda Commissioner Drew Harris will attend.
