An Garda Siochana is asking for market views about possibly deploying AI assisted traffic cameras.
A procurement note says they could be used to track motorists who are using phones or committing other offences.
The system would cost 100 million euro, according to that same document.
Liam Herrick from the Irish Council for Civil Liberties says any use of technology like this raises serious questions around data protection:
'Are there proper safeguards in place to make sure that if we trying to achieve a legitimate aim by Road Safety . The enforcement of rules such as speeding and so on can we if you like seal and protect that function away from other less desirable and illegitimate purposes such as the tracking of people.'
