Gardaí in Longford are warning the public to be aware of text scams circulating in the community pretending to offer cuts to electricity bills. The text tells the individual that they are entitled to discounted electricity bills under the emergency benefit scheme. An attached link takes the person to a fake webpage designed to look like a government website and asks the person for personal information including their bank details.
Scammers then use the information to transfer money from the victims bank accounts. Longford Gardaí are warning the public to think twice before interacting with unsolicited calls or texts claiming to be from official organisations. The public are advised to contact the service in question directly if they have concerns over the validity of the call or text.
