Gardaí are out in force nationwide this morning to enforce Level 5 Covid-19 restrictions.

For the next six weeks people can't go more than five kilometres from their home - apart from a few exemptions, while fines are to be introduced to boost compliance.

Non-essential retail is closed, restaurants and bars are takeaway only, but schools, creches and construction remain open.

It comes as the national 14-day incidence rate per 100,000 is now 291 - while Cavan's is in excess of 1,000.

Roscommon has recorded 16 new cases accorinding to last night's briefing, with six more positive results in Longford and five recorded for Leitrim.

The Taoiseach hopes the measures will allow people to celebrate Christmas in a 'meaningful way'.
