There's been a significant decrease in crime in county Roscommon in the last year.
Presentations to the Joint Policing Committee on Monday show that burglaries in the Castlerea area have halved in the last 12 months while public order offences in Roscommon are down 48 per cent.
Roscommon Superintendent Fran Nichoson has outlined that in the Roscommon area in 2020, thefts and burglaries dropped by a third, and assaults, minor and serious have fell by 23 per cent.
However, the number of detections of drunk and drug driving has increased by 51% , there were 62 cases in 2020, compared to 41 in 2019, the majority of which were drug related.
Superintendent Nicholson has noted that the establishment of an enhanced CCTV system in Roscommon town has been critical in solving serious crimes.
In the Castlerea area, Inspector Adrian Flynn has reported that burglaries and thefts have halved in the last year, assault decreased by 29 per cent and criminal damage has dropped by 13 per cent.
Public order offences have also dropped by 13 per cent.
There has been good news on the incidents of economic fraud, which halved in the last year, which Inspector Flynn has attributed to working with local agencies and media campaigns around the issue.
