Garda in Leitrim are urging people to be aware that the so called '083' phone scam is still in operation.
The scam, which often shows up as a call from an 083 number claiming to be a government agency, warns the recipient their PPS number has been connected with a serious crime.
Another phone based scam currently on the rise in the wake of the cyber attack on the HSE has seen fake calls purporting to be from the health service urging the victim to update their personal and banking details, which the scammers claim have been lost in the hacking.
Local Gardaí say they have been inundated with reports of the scam across the Shannonside Northern Sound Region.
Garda Dora Tracey from Carrick-on-Shannon is calling on people not to engage with these scammers when they call and never give any personal or banking details and also to report the call to your local garda station.
