Students across the Shannonside region are being warned to be mindful of accommodation scams as the new term approaches.
The message comes from the Garda National Economic Crime Bureau who say over 290 thousand euro has been scammed so far this year.
It's when a fake ad for a home to rent is advertised, leading to vulnerable renters to pay a deposit to secure the house.
While around half of the claims come from Dublin, the advice is also being issued to local students.
Speaking to Shannonside FM recently TUS Students Union President feared Emergency measures to help students in the face of the accommodation crisis may leave them open to exploitation.
Niall Naughten raised concerns that students taking part in the new accommodation scheme have little to no legal protection as the renters are not registered landlords.
Detective Superintendent Michael Cryan says there are some red flags to watch out for:
If the advertisement comes to the person through social media or a pop up ad then be cautious.
It doesn't necessarily mean it's a fraudulent ad, but jut be cautious.
If there is a sense of urgency such as the seller saying it's a one time offer or this is your only chance then you must be suspicious.
