Gardai in the Shannonside region are urging homeowners to secure fuel tanks with a rise in reported incidents in recent weeks.
It's understood that due to the increase in the price of petrol and diesel there is a marked rise in incidents involving domestic fuel tanks.
Roscommon-based Sgt Ronan O'Meara is urging people to take precautions and to secure their tanks
He says even small efforts can deter criminals :
"With the price of fuel increasing it is important to know your tank is protected. Keep it visible from a habitable building, and reduce access points near the tank, keep gates closed and locked and consider using an anti-siphoning devices and consider a detection system and consider a CCTV system."
