A man in his 60s was working on a closed section of the Athlone road leading into the town when he was struck by a works vehicle after 7 o'clock yesterday evening.

The 52-year-old made a false statement to Gardaí that his cattle were missing when they were actually in his neighbour's shed.

The Athlone Road entering the town is currently closed and is expected to remain so over night.

They have asked people not to engage unless they are sure the person is reputable.

Anyone who was in the area on Sunday and who has dash cam footage are asked to make it available to Longford Gardaí.

Gardaí say no arrests have been made and investigations are ongoing at this time.

When last seen yesterday in the Newtownforbes Road area outside of Drumlish, Peter was wearing a blue knitted jumper, dark trousers and a dark baseball cap with a red peak.

A man was arrested at the scene after staff intervened an ended the alleged assault.
