Frank Feighan was the only candidate chosen at the Sligo-Leitrim selection convention last night.

Fine Gael have failed to win a seat in the constituency since the 2011 General Election.

Sitting Fine Gael TD in the constituency, Frank Feighan, has already confirmed that he is seeking to retain his Dáil seat.

He said the former Rural and Community Development Minister delivered substantial funding to counties in the Shannonside region.

He was speaking following his appointment as Sinn Féin's spokesperson on agriculture this week.

The Standards in Public Office Commission is investigating the issue and a hearing was held last month.

Although the counting of votes is still continuing, Labour is on track to secure over 400 seats.

There has been much speculation recently that the election will be called shortly after the delivery of the Budget.
