A garda medal ceremony tomorrow will focus on events at Derrada Wood in Leitrim in 1983 when a recruit garda and an army soldier were shot dead by the IRA.
The kidnapping of Don Tidey by the IRA in '83 led to a nationwide manhunt and a large number of gardaí and army were sent to search the woods in Derrada where the gang had been traced to.
Don Tidey was freed safely when the hideout was discovered on the 16th of December that year, but Garda Gary Sheehan from Carrickmacross and Private Patrick Kelly originally from Ballinamuck in Longford were both shot dead.
14 of the Scott medals being presented tomorrow are being awarded to Garda members resulting from their actions over the course of that afternoon.
A Gold Scott medal is being awarded posthumously to Garda Sheehan.
