A Leitrim councillor is calling on the government to provide funding to help keep a vital community amenity alive.
The issue came before the latest meeting of Leitrim County Council.
Councillor Sean McGowan tabelled a motion asking that the Leitrim Community Car scheme be given an annual funding allocation.
The scheme is looking for a total of €60,000 to cover expenses and to appoint a co-ordinator to oversee the car's operation.
Speaking to Shannonside FM, Councillor McGowan says it's essential that volunteers are not left out of pocket.
'What they are trying to do is to put a proper structure in place, that the funding is there to make sure the volunteers who are driving to be out of pocket.
To cover the fuel and to cover the out of pocket expenses, that's what the €30,000 would go towards.
They are looking for a coordinator to co-ordinate the whole lot, so as I say €60,000 all in would provide this badly needed service.'
