Discussions are underway with the Irish Red Cross to see if Granard will host a centre for Ukrainian refugees arriving in Ireland.
The town's Convent of Mercy has been highlighted as a potential hub to support Ukrainian nationals who have fled the Russian invasion.
The hubs are being set up across the country and are designed to help arriving Ukrainians to obtain PPS numbers, access social welfare supports and receive translation and educational information.
The late nineteenth-century convent on Barrack Street in the town has been closed for a number of years and was donated to the Sue Ryder Foundation in 2013.
