There are calls for a major education program to be developed after the body of a dead dog was found dumped in the open air at a well-known beauty spot in Leitrim.
The Leitrim Animal Welfare centre has issued an appeal for anyone with information to come forward after a terrier-type dog was dumped in a bag by the Lough Allen Canal in Drumshanbo last week.
The group says that they believe that "until a robust action plan is in place to help the animal welfare sector, we fear animals, horses and dogs like this will continue to be viewed as disposable by some in society."
In a graphic Facebook post this afternoon, the charity says that it has shared the images to try and reveal the task they face educating people on the best care for animals and the challenges they face every day when dealing with animal cruelty and neglect cases.
The group is urging anyone who may be able to identify the dog, or its owner, to contact the local dog warden.
