The Higher Planning Authority has upheld planning permission for the demolition of the Lough Ree Power Station.
The ESB applied for and were granted permission to take the Lanesboro plant down last year and replace it on site with a battery energy storage system.
The planned demolition will include the boiler house, turbine house, bag filter house and associated 80-metre high stack among other structures.
The original application was the subject of several submissions criticising and objecting to the plans.
These issues included concerns over the loss of the energy generating equipment in the face of what was branded an ongoing energy crisis.
Another complaint highlighted was a proposed risk of fire once the battery storage facility was operational and the argument that any demolition and subsequent construction would only bring short term gains to the town.
A planning appeal submitted to An Bord Pleanála by Liam Kelly has been refused, with the original planning permission now upheld.
In the order from the higher planning authority, a number of management plans must be put in place to mitigate issues from the demolition such as dust, noise or water pollution.
The plans will go ahead with ten conditions attached, one stating that works must take place within the next ten years.
