Gun ownership not the answer to local crime spree warns expert

Those in the areas affected by the spate of burglaries have been expressing their anger at the rising crime levels.

Gun ownership is not a solution to rural crime according to the Vice Chair of the National Association of Regional Game Council.

Public conversation around gun ownership has been growing in recent weeks due to a recent spate of home and commercial premises burglaries.

A series of burglaries in Elphin, Tulsk, Ballaghaderreen, Castleplunkett and Loughglynn among others are currently under investigation by An Garda Siochána.

The increase in incidents have been attributed to low Garda resources in the area according to several local representatives.

Roscommon Native Dan Curley is with the N.A.R.G.C. which is the largest voluntary organisation in Ireland involved in game hunting and firearm training.

He's warning people that Irish legislation does not allow for dun ownership for home defence:
