The details were gathered as part of Census 2022 and shows that out of 55,880 households, over 27,000 recorded at least one Irish speaker in the home.

Half of households in the Shannonside Region stated they have at least one Irish speaker in their home. The details were gathered as part of Census 2022 and shows that out of 55,880 households, over 27,000 recorded at least one Irish speaker in the home. Roscommon had the highest levels locally, with 13,197 households stating having an Irish speaker under the roof, just over 50 percent.

That is followed by Leitrim where 48 percent of families were recorded as having at least one member with a level of fluency of Irish. Longford had the lowest levels of Irish fluency locally, with 45 percent according to Census 2022. Both Leitrim and Longford fall below the national rate of 50 percent.
