Diseases of the circulatory system such as heart disease were the biggest cause of death in the Shannonside region in 2020.
It comes as cancer was reported as the biggest cause of death in the country.
The vital statistics report from the CSO sets out the most common causes of death in 2020. The report shows that Malignant Neoplasms, or cancer, was the cause of 9892 deaths nationally, and the most common cause of death in Ireland. However it shows that in the 3 counties in the Shannonside region diseases of the circulatory system such as heart disease and aneurysms was the biggest cause of death, with 321 deaths recorded. 83 of those were in Longford, 91 in Leitrim, and 147 in Roscommon
306 deaths were due to cancer and 136 were due to respiratory diseases. External causes of injury and poisoning were linked with 56 deaths in the region and 68 were associated with Dementia and Alzheimers. 16 suicides were recorded in the region, 6 in Longford, 2 in Leitrim, and 8 in Roscommon.
Nationally, 32,856 deaths were recorded in Ireland in 2020
