Staff from the Irish Heart Foundation will be meeting TD's and Senators at Leinster House today

More than a quarter of heart failure patients say they feel abandoned when they're discharged from hospital.

A study of 200 people with heart failure has found 74% say their psychological support needs aren't being met, and nearly 40% of working-age patients don't have a medical or GP visit card.

Heart failure happens when the heart finds it harder to pump blood around the body properly.

The Irish Heart Foundation will call for a national heart failure registry when it meets TDs and Senators at Leinster House today.

IHF spokesperson Chris Macey says those with heart failure suffer financially too.

'60 % experience  a big drop in income, with large numbers not being able to work , and then also experiencing much much higher costs, things like medical bills, medication, higher household bills, y'know for heat and light and that, and people are really struggling as a result of that so they do feel abandoned and they feel invisible'
