All heavy goods vehicles will be banned from Longford town by the end of the year.
That's according to Councillor Seamus Butler who believes the move will be a generational change.
While access will be given to large lorries wishing to make deliveries all other HGV's will be diverted around the town centre via Ballyminion.
Transport Infrastructure Ireland have now signed off on the change and it's hoped signage will be erected by the end of December.
Councillor Butler feels the news will be welcomed by locals and believes there's a need to semi-pedestrianise Longford town centre at some point in the future.
Speaking to Shannonside FM the Fianna Fail representative explains how the new plan will work.
''Parts of Longford town and estates like Teffia Park and Park Road have been bedeviled by heavy goods vehicles going through the town and now rather than coming in the N63 and in the Battery Road and the Dublin Road they will be going around the town and if they need to get out to the N63 the Athlone/Lanseborough Road they'll be going through Ballyminion and using the existing bypass.''
