A Leitrim Care Centre has been found in need of a number of improvements following a HIQA inspection.
The HSE run Arus Carolan Nursing Unit in Mohil was the subject of a unannounced inspection in October of last year.
The centre provides 24-hour nursing care to 36 male and female residents over 18 years of age, who require long-term and short-term care including dementia, convalescence and palliative care.
Overall inspectors found that residents were generally content with living in the centre.
However, some residents who remained in their bedrooms expressed dissatisfaction regarding their quality of life.
It was the findings of the report that residents were not ensured that those who remained in their bedrooms had adequate opportunities for meaningful social activities to meet their interests and capacities.
Governance and management of the centre was found to be non compliant in the areas of progressing required fire safety works, facility upgrades and maintenance.
Other issues identified included the premises and infrastructure of the centre with problems such as rust on radiators, patient bedroom sizes and layout.
An issue was also highlighted with the Clinical hand-wash sinks in the centre as they did not comply with current recommended specifications, leading to a lack of effective hand hygiene.
The centre was marked as fully compliant in areas including staffing, healthcare, fire safety and visiting, with a number of other substantial compliances.
The HSE confirmed to HIQA officials that an action plan is currently in place to address the issues highlighted in the inspection.
