A Roscommon Care Centre has been found in need of a number of improvements following a HIQA inspection.
The HSE run Aras Mhathair Phoil in Castlerea was the subject of an unannounced one day inspection in January.
Twenty four residents of the centre have 24 hour access to nursing care, including long- and short-term care, palliative and dementia care.
Overall inspectors found that residents were generally content with living in the centre.
Residents feedback was positive regarding their lives and they enjoyed the social activities on offer.
However, some residents who remained in their bedrooms were dissatisfied with their quality of life.
Governance and management at the centre was found to be non compliant in the areas of maintenance and the quality assurance systems in place to ensure safety of the
service.
The provider had not ensured that all staff had access to appropriate training in areas such as fire safety.
Other issues identified included the management of one resident’s wound and the skills appropriate to respond to challenging patient behaviours.
The centre was marked as fully compliant in areas including visits, record keeping, safeguarding residents from abuse and support by staff for patients with vision and hearing needs.
